First shot rendered with 144 AA. Second shot with 256 AA. Depth of field versus sampling. Ideally they should both be higher, but even at this resolution they take days to render…
The previous renders were composited for speed but was not happy with the solutions to create depth. This scene requires a combined render, not just for the DOF, but also for the particles system. Also for the first time – sound! Makes a big difference and a big thanks to Carl Cottrell for that.

Took a while to figure out but actually quite simple. Mesh has 2 particle systems with sphere bubbles, and an extra with metaballs. Will see how my friend handles motion soon…
Started work on the under landscape which was reasonably simple as far as modeling goes. The texturing was an opportunity to try out the new micro-displacement in Blender 2.78. which can be run off the graphic card – except not for me, as it requires over 4 GB memory.
To make it even more impractical I also tested some Volume scattering…

Admit this is a more enjoyable character to make, but dealing with the curve modifier and particles in Blender – well that’s maybe another matter. The image below is pretty much a work in progress …
I’ve tried various approaches to this character over the years – this somewhat smaller guy is the latest. He is rigged, but at this stage he is just for testing…
